Standard Life re-enters onshore investment bond market

Standard Life has re-entered the onshore investment bond market with the relaunch of its Tailored Investment Bond.

The relaunch sees the addition of a range of modernised features aimed at meeting the evolving tax planning needs of advisers and their clients.

The firm noted that advisers and clients were facing new challenges posed by recent Budgets, catalysing greater interest in onshore bonds as they look to address the changing capital gains tax (CGT) and inheritance tax (IHT) landscape, alongside emerging tax issues surrounding their clients’ affairs.

Its research found that advisers estimated around 40 per cent of clients would require a review of their existing plans with pensions being brought into scope of IHT from April 2027, with trusts and onshore bonds the top non-pension products advisers expect to grow in popularity post rule change.

Standard Life said its Tailored Investment Bond included new external multi-asset funds, flexible access, strong wealth protection and estate planning capabilities, and fully digital online servicing.

Its bond’s investment range has been expanded with the addition of external multi-asset funds from HSBC & Vanguard, CT Threadneedle, and L&G & BNY Mellon.

The bond also gives investors access to a range of asset classes comprising equities, managed funds, property, and money market instruments.

Standard Life said that the ability to place the bond in trust added to its appeal to advisers by supporting estate planning and wealth transfer strategies as clients increasingly look to preserve and pass on wealth.

“The advice market is adjusting to some of the most disruptive changes in recent memory with alterations to IHT and CGT requiring advisers to realign retirement strategies for clients,” commented Standard Life had of retail intermediary and private client distribution, Warren Bright.

“This has seen a resurgence in interest in onshore bonds and the underlying tax efficiencies they provide.

“Using our bond market expertise, the Tailored Investment Bond development now sits alongside our well-established International Bond, to provide a comprehensive range of solutions that meet the increasing wealth protection and estate planning needs of advisers.”
